Division 1:
TIE for 1st- Lansing Community College and Washtenaw Community College
Judge comments:
To me it was a tough choice between the LCC Lookout and The Washtenaw Voice. Both papers had strong writing, articles that were relevant to their audience, plenty of great art and the layout was great. From a layout standpoint you really had two different styles, more of a magazine style with LCC and more of a traditional newspaper design with Washtenaw. Both were done very well. It was nearly
a tie in my book, but I felt LCC just barely edged out Washtenaw.
3rd- Schoolcraft Community College
Judge comments:
I really liked the way the Schoolcraft Connection pushed the boundaries of traditional design in its layout. The writing was good and interesting. I would have liked to see a little more original photography throughout, but I know during a pandemic, that can be tough.

Honorable Mention: Henry Ford College
Judge comments:
The Mirror News earned an honorable mention because I think the design looks terrific. It’s a very nice looking publication, and I felt they should be recognized for their design work.
Division 2:
1st- Northwestern Michigan Community College
Judge comments:
Does White Pice Press, as the only division entry, win be default? The editor-in-chief, Kathryn DePauw, writes well and often. Her three stories in this eight-page issue include the main feature about the school’s observatory and astronomy instructor sharing live video from their telescope to
the rest of the world, a neat piece. Kyle Hoffman writes about a couple of area high schools and a star player involved in a kerfuffle over the application, or lack thereof, of the state athletic association’s mercy rule. I felt DePauw’s impassioned and detailed argument for COVID-related
school masking policies, as the mom of a “medically fragile” child, should have been labeled more clearly as opinion. I like this little paper, which as a business-like feel and seems to be well-edited.
