Important, relevant, valuable story. Strong lede followed by interesting, eye popping facts. Well sentenced. Short paragraphs with a punch. Good job making sense of the data and numbers for your readers. Subheads address the next question of readers, prompting them to continue reading. Pull out quotes are attention grabbing. Overall- the story is very well done. Part 1 of the story is equally well done.

2nd- Jordan Scenna (Washtenaw Community College)

Judge comments:

Relevant topic addressing timely issue. Interesting lede draws readers in - making story more personal. Strong facts/ data used to help make case, sources localize issue, helping address reader's concerns of safety of campus. "What to do.." Steps are helpful for readers - good way to finish off the story. Graphics and photo offer understanding and humanize the story. Overall- very well done.

Strong lede - direct and to the point. Good use of inverted pyramid and covering 5 W's. Good sourcing and including facts/data. Graphs are helpful for readers to understand numbers. Great job finding and including people who've personally experienced it. Their stories are interesting and making the topic more personal. Helpful in humanizing the story. Finishing story with opportunity for reader to help -> great way to end. Overall - very good job.

Solid coverage of election candidates. Good job writing and presenting both candidates objectively. Smart to end with information too. Help readers know how to qualify and register to vote. Overall, very good job.

Honorable Mention- Group Submission from Henry Ford College

Judge comments:

Interesting topic - uncovering a hidden gem in community and digging into its history. Lede draws reader's in - piquing interest and sparking image of personally walking through. Story includes valuable historical facts and information. Solid source with expertise. In addition -- outsiders adding input from family members of those buried there to help humanize the story more. Also - consider breaking copy into shorter paragraphs. Overall - very good job, interesting story.
