This story was all about news that students can use: In this case, writing about one of the top stories for older students during the pandemic – how to find child care in order to attend classes. When you read this story, you do not have to guess much – it explains where the child-care option on campus is located, how it works, what kind of curriculum it uses, and that a summer camp was available. It also includes a phone number for students who want to receive even more details and information. What is especially important in college newspaper stories is whenever possible, taking the time to add voices from actual students, and this story accomplished that. The reporter did a nice job stringing a lot of information together in a readable format, and the photos accompanying the story help to illustrate for readers what the classrooms looked like for potential customers.

This was an important story for students on campus due to the
safety aspect. The reporter included several solid details, which combined with
the photo made for a compelling police story. Working the cops beat is common
for young (and veteran) reporters anywhere, so it is good to get experience
when you can. I like that the reporter included the date of the latest update
from police, letting readers know where the investigation stood before the
paper went to print or the story was posted online. What helped set this story
apart was being able to include the voice of the Learning Commons employee
who was quick to the scene. There is nothing like an accurate first-hand account
to improve a story and bring in the human element. It was wise to add contacts
for police at the end of the story.

The reporter did a good job breaking down the biggest story of
the past two years – on campus or off. Lauren Brutger’s graphic and the
frequently asked questions helped bring the story into focus. Using the
student’s quote early in the story was beneficial. The reporter helped to explain
to students what would happen at WCC if a student did test positive. This was a
solid effort.

The reporter did a nice job telling the story of HEFC in a clear,
succinct way. As a reader, I appreciate the reporter putting in the time to add
student voices to the story. That is so important, especially in a college
newspaper. Nice work.
