Judge comments:
The writer shows some polished skills and clearly put some time and effort into
crafting this story. Would have been nice to include some player comments to help flush out the feature angle of playing at that storied diamond. But it was an interesting story and an easy read. The writer has a promising future in the journalism field.

Judge comments:
The writer found a compelling story to tell and shared it in an entertaining manner. Sometimes half the battle is getting the source to open up, and the writer did a good job of that and culled plenty of excellent quotes. There is some cleanup to do, and the story could have been more in- depth (unless there were space limitations). But the writer clearly has skills and promise for a career in journalism.

Judge comments:
The writer shows a good nose for a newsworthy story. This is a story that draws the interest of readers, regardless if they’re from the area or follow the sport. There are some style issues and the voice fluctuates between editorial and feature. But the foundation of a good writer is here and I encourage him to continue on this path.
