Original Comic – Entertainment

1st- Abby Haywood (Grand Rapids Community College)

Judge comments:

I’m pleased to see Abby here as well. Although, I admit I was going to switch her submission for Editorial Cartoons with this “Comic”, and this submission instead in the Editorial Cartoons category. But over the years the clear difference of the two has blurred. And that’s not a bad thing (or Abby’s fault – or her advisor’s – lol). To be honest, if Abby had submitted both in one category or the other, she’d have gotten first and second. She is very talented and obviously has an opinion (hurray!) and the talent to voice that well (hurray!). I love, here, the out-of-focus crowd, the well-done recognizable caricature of Rodgers. I’m hoping I see much more of Abby’s work. Good stuff!

2nd- Ethan Kuhl (Monroe Co. Community College)

Judge comments:

I really enjoyed seeing this four-panel. The 3rd was a great surprise. Rather than keeping all headshots the same in all four panels, the large “zoomed in” face was great. And wonderfully done. More detailed than the smaller ones – and I would have hoped – rather than just enlarging the simple drawn smaller head. It made me think of an old comic (REALLY old, like 100 year- old). And that’s good. A nice technique that reminded me of classic cartoons. And that tells me that Ethan has been influenced, if not studied, the history of comics and animation. This four-panel is a little Windsor McCay and a little “Gerald McBoing-Boing” and a lot of Ethan Kuhl. I look forward to seeing more. Much more!

3rd- Katherine Warden (Henry Ford College)

Judge comments:

HENRY FORD never disappoints. Always always always a joy to see the entries. This entry by Katherine was super fun to see. Not only done well, but done cleverly. With the Hawkster mascot having issues with Zoom Filters (a funny concept alone – we’ve all been doing Zoom Meetings and all the snafus that come with that technology). But taken one step further with other Mascot Filters. It wouldn’t have been near as good a comic with random filters. And it’s great that each mascot is drawn identifiable at a glance. Not need to figure it out or, worse, for the artist to have to label. Very talented. Very. I continue to look forward to seeing Henry Ford’s offerings in the future! Great job!

Honorable Mention - Edgar Gutierrez  (Henry Ford College)

Judge comments:

As I wrote, HENRY FORD never disappoints. This made me laugh aloud – especially
the second panel with the “When the going gets tough, the meat tastes like cardboard!”, really got me. Very nice work. I would have liked to have been able to read the words in the balloons/bubbles better... easier. But a great comic. Edgar did a nice job... keep drawing!!!
